
1. Same Game, Different Outcome
There is a game in which a balloon on screen grows more valuable the more you inflate it — but push too far and it bursts, wiping out the entire round. Researchers at McGill University in Canada used that game in an experiment.
Participants who sat upright inflated their balloons further and still walked away with larger rewards than those who sat slouched.
The team concluded this was not coincidence: posture alone changed how people handled risk. The findings were published in the British Journal of Psychology.
2. Why This Study Is Different — Trying to Move Past the Power Pose Debate
The idea that posture changes the mind — the so-called power pose hypothesis — has been argued over for years.
Critics kept raising the same objection: participants may have guessed what the researchers wanted and behaved accordingly, so the result would reflect obliging behaviour rather than any real effect of posture.
The McGill team took that problem head-on. They designed the experiment so that participants had no idea their posture was being manipulated at all.
3. How They Changed Posture Without Anyone Noticing
About 200 members of the McGill community were recruited and told only that they were evaluating a tablet app.
In reality, one group received the tablet on a raised stand, which naturally led them to sit up straight, while the other group found the tablet lying flat on a low desk, which pulled them into a hunch.
No one was ever told how to sit — only the position of the tablet changed. The team went further and used video software to measure participants’ neck angles in real time, verifying objectively that the manipulation worked as intended.
In interviews afterwards, most participants said they had no idea their posture had been steered.
4. What Actually Changed
Everyone then played the balloon game described above, and the results were clear. The upright group took larger risks while earning more, and on questionnaires they also reported significantly more positive emotions such as pride.

5. Not More Reckless, but Judging Better
George Amory, the McGill professor who led the study, framed the result carefully: participants had not become more reckless, he said, but were handling risk more effectively.
In that reading, upright posture did not make people fearless — it helped them assess the situation more calmly and respond less emotionally.
6. The Limits Are Clear
The researchers themselves warned against over-reading the finding. Changing your posture will not dramatically change your life, they noted, and the size of the effect is not large.
The experiment also ran in a controlled laboratory setting, so whether the same effect appears in a real office or at home still needs further testing.
7. Applying It to Everyday Life
Even so, the implication is not trivial. Small design details of a working environment — desk and chair height, for example — may reach as far as mood and decision-making.
With remote work and long hours of sitting now common, raising a monitor or laptop to eye level so you can sit with your back straight may be more than posture correction. It could also help with managing your mood and getting work done.
